Hi ,

We're excited to launch our reimagined SOMO Life newsletter.

Each month, we'll share must-read (or must-watch) resources, local news and events, in-depth interviews with the incredible people shaping Sonoma County, and a 15-second philosophy for you to ponder in the month to come.

Community Builders: Calm Mama’s Marcella Wilson

Community Builder Profile: Marcella Wilson, Calm Mama

As a mom, it can be tough to find a balance between caring for yourself and caring for others.

That's why Sonoma County resident Marcella Wilson and her friend Amy Leyva founded Calm Mama Retreats to give moms the space they need to reconnect with their body, mind, and soul.

Marcella’s mission is simple: to remind moms that they deserve the same love and care they so often give to others.

Read our full interview with Marcella to learn more about her business, her mission, and how making space for moms to practice self-care creates a stronger community.

Essential Eight with Dr. Carole Yoshiwara

Dr. Carole Yoshiwara is a sports chiropractor in Santa Rosa, passionate about helping athletes and anyone eager to take charge of their health.

In her free time, she enjoys training for sprint triathlons and half marathons and hitting the trails with her dog, Hope.

We asked Dr. Carole to share her Essential Eight. Here's what she told us.

1. An essential book to read
10x is Easier than 2x by Benjamin Hardy and Dan Sullivan. A great read for entrepreneurs or business owners.

2. An essential office item
My tea station, especially during the cooler months. I’ve got a variety of teas depending on my mood, and it helps me focus when I need to get work done.

3. An essential home item
My Kitchen Aid stand mixer. I love to bake and experiment in the kitchen. Anything sourdough and anything sweet.

4. An essential activity to try
Surfing. I haven’t surfed in a while, but it’s always a great challenge, the conditions are never the same, you get to be one with the ocean, and get a workout.

5. An essential skill to master
Time management. Your life will run smoother and decrease your stress in your busy life. I always have my paper planner with me!

6. An essential lesson to learn
You will never get what you never ask for. If you want something, go get it, or ask someone who can help you. No one can read your mind, so speak up.

7. An essential food to try
Anything I haven’t tried before. I am all about trying and tasting new foods. I like to say I don’t want to make a judgment on it until I try it.

8. An essential recipe to try
Any sourdough recipe. I love experimenting with sweet and savory sourdough recipes. My top ones right now are brown butter sourdough chocolate chip cookies and English muffins.

15-second philosophy

Something to consider for the month to come.

Nature knows best. When in doubt, step outside. Fresh air, sunlight, and even a short walk can reset your mind, boost creativity, and lift your mood.
